Best Hidden Royalty Fantasy Books for Your Next Book Hangover

Welcome to the next post in my fantasy recommendation series, where I'll be sharing some of my favorite fantasy books for your next book hangover. This time we're diving into one of my all-time favorite tropes: hidden royalty.

Whether it's a farm girl who has no idea she's destined for the throne, a prince hiding his identity to escape those hunting him, or a long-forgotten heir whose existence could change the fate of an entire kingdom, I can't seem to get enough of stories where royal blood is hidden beneath an ordinary life. For me, this trope combines everything I love about fantasy: political intrigue, long-buried secrets, character growth, and those unforgettable moments when the truth finally comes to light.

For this list, I'm including both hidden royalty—where the character doesn't yet know they have royal blood—and royalty in hiding, where they do know who they are but are forced to conceal their identity from those in power. While they're slightly different takes on the trope, both create the same delicious anticipation as the story builds toward the inevitable reveal.

Maybe my love of royal characters started with all those Disney princess movies I grew up watching, or maybe I just can't resist a story where an overlooked character turns out to be far more important than anyone ever imagined. Either way, hidden royalty has become one of my favorite fantasy tropes—and it's one I find myself weaving into my own books again and again.

Every book and series on this list is one I've personally read and enjoyed, and I'll continue adding new favorites over time as I discover more hidden royalty stories worth obsessing over. If one of your favorites isn't here yet, or you have a recommendation I should add to my TBR, I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

⚠️ A Quick Spoiler Warning

One small warning before we dive in! Hidden royalty is one of those fantasy tropes that's often meant to be a surprise. In many of these books, you aren't supposed to know going in that a character is secretly royal—or that they're hiding their identity from the people around them.

Simply by appearing on this list, some of these books have that reveal spoiled to one degree or another. I've avoided discussing how or when those reveals happen, but if you'd rather experience those twists completely blind, you may want to bookmark this page and come back later. Otherwise, welcome—you've found some of my favorite hidden royalty stories!

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★

🌶️ Spice Level: None (YA)

❤️ Romance Level: High

👑 Royalty Trope: Hidden Royalty

📚 Series Status: Complete (4 books + novellas)

✨ Vibe: Futuristic fairy tale retellings, political intrigue, found family, romance, and unforgettable characters.

The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time, and one of my all-time favorite examples of the hidden royalty trope. The reveal completely caught me off guard—I didn't even begin to suspect where the story was heading until I was well into the first book—and watching everything slowly fall into place was incredibly satisfying.

Set in a futuristic world where Earth and the Lunar colony are on the brink of political conflict, the series brilliantly reimagines classic fairy tales. Cinder gives us a fresh take on Cinderella, Scarlet draws inspiration from Little Red Riding Hood, Cress reimagines Rapunzel, and Winter puts a unique spin on Snow White. Somehow, Marissa Meyer manages to weave all of these familiar stories into one cohesive narrative that feels completely original.

One of my favorite things about this series is how it grows with each book. Every installment introduces a new protagonist while continuing the stories of the characters you've already fallen in love with. The result is one of the best found families I've ever read, with an ensemble cast that only gets stronger as the series progresses. Cress was my personal favorite, though by the time I reached the end of the series, I had literal tears in my eyes.

Although this is a young adult series with no spice, don't let that fool you into thinking the romance lacks heart. The relationships are wonderfully developed, the chemistry is undeniable, and those hard-earned kisses had me swooning every bit as much as many adult fantasy romances.

Tropes & Themes: Hidden royalty, fairy tale retellings, found family, political intrigue, slow-burn romance, chosen family, rebellion, multiple POVs, futuristic fantasy.

Perfect For Fans Of: Fairy tale retellings, ensemble casts, political fantasy, character-driven adventures, and readers who love watching an ordinary person discover they're destined for something far greater.

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★

🌶️ Spice Level: None (YA)

❤️ Romance Level: Medium-High

👑 Royalty Trope: Royalty in Hiding

📚 Series Status: Complete Duology

✨ Vibe: Asian-inspired fantasy, fairy tale retelling, magic, romance, family bonds, and political intrigue.

Elizabeth Lim has become one of my auto-buy authors, and Six Crimson Cranes is one of the reasons why. Inspired by The Wild Swans, this beautiful Asian-inspired fantasy follows a princess whose six brothers are cursed into cranes while she is forced from the palace under a powerful enchantment. Stripped of her royal identity, she must navigate the world in hiding while searching for a way to break the curse and save her family.

One of my favorite things about this story was how richly it drew from East Asian culture and folklore. The world feels vibrant and immersive, from the magic system to the court politics and breathtaking settings. As the story unfolds, Shiori finds herself far from the palace, working among strangers and slowly discovering her own strength while an unexpected romance begins to blossom.

I especially loved watching Shiori grow throughout the duology. She begins as a sheltered princess but gradually becomes courageous, resourceful, and willing to sacrifice everything for the people she loves. The family dynamics between Shiori and her brothers were wonderful, and the political intrigue and unexpected twists toward the end kept me guessing until the very last pages.

If you enjoy fairy tale retellings with heartfelt romance, beautiful worldbuilding, and heroines who truly earn their happy endings, I can't recommend this duology enough.

Tropes & Themes: Royalty in hiding, fairy tale retelling, cursed siblings, family loyalty, political intrigue, slow-burn romance, found courage, East Asian-inspired fantasy, magical quests.

Perfect For Fans Of: Lush fantasy worlds, fairy tale retellings, family-centered adventures, romantic subplots, and beautifully written character journeys.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★

🌶️ Spice Level: High

❤️ Romance Level: Very High

👑 Royalty Trope: Hidden Royalty

📚 Series Status: Ongoing

✨ Vibe: Spicy romantasy, forbidden romance, political intrigue, adventure, vampires, and shocking twists.

From Blood and Ash is one of the books that helped launch the romantasy boom, and it's easy to see why. While I originally picked it up for the romance, I quickly became invested in the mystery surrounding Poppy's identity and the ever-expanding political landscape. What begins as the story of a young woman whose life seems tightly controlled gradually transforms into something much bigger, with revelations that completely reshape your understanding of who she is and the role she's destined to play.

Poppy and Cas remain one of my favorite fantasy couples. Their relationship develops beautifully over the course of the series, balancing emotional vulnerability, undeniable chemistry, and plenty of witty banter. This is definitely a spicy series, and if you enjoy vampire-inspired fantasy, you'll probably appreciate the unique take on blood magic and the deliciously tension-filled blood-sharing scenes.

Beyond the romance, there's no shortage of adventure. The story is packed with dangerous journeys, political conspiracies, ancient secrets, and terrifying creatures that gave me serious zombie vibes—even if they're definitely not called zombies. I loved how each book continued to unravel the world's mythology while raising the stakes for both the characters and the kingdoms around them.

If you're looking for a fantasy romance with addictive chemistry, plenty of action, and a hidden royalty storyline that grows more fascinating with every revelation, this series is well worth the journey.

Tropes & Themes: Hidden royalty, forbidden romance, enemies to lovers, political intrigue, vampires, blood magic, chosen one, adventure, secrets and lies, found family.

Perfect For Fans Of: Spicy romantasy, slow-burn relationships with incredible payoff, vampire-inspired fantasy, expansive worldbuilding, and stories where every answer uncovers an even bigger mystery.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★

🌶️ Spice Level: Low

❤️ Romance Level: Medium

👑 Royalty Trope: Hidden Royalty

📚 Series Status: Complete

✨ Vibe: Epic fantasy, political intrigue, unforgettable characters, hidden identities, and emotionally rewarding long-term storytelling.

If I were making a list of the greatest hidden royalty reveals I've ever read, Throne of Glass would be near the very top. What begins as the story of an infamous assassin competing for her freedom slowly unfolds into something so much bigger, and one of the series' biggest reveals absolutely left me speechless. Looking back, all the clues were there—I just never pieced them together until Sarah J. Maas was ready to drop the mic.

One of the things I love most about this series is its incredible scope. Every book expands the world, raises the stakes, and introduces unforgettable new characters, all while weaving together political intrigue, ancient magic, and some of the most satisfying character arcs I've ever read. By the end, it feels less like you've read a series and more like you've lived through an epic journey alongside the characters.

Although this recommendation is focused on the hidden royalty trope, I'd be doing the series a disservice if I didn't mention Manon and the wyverns. Their storyline became one of my favorite fantasy arcs of all time, and the aerial battles, rider bonds, and dragon-rider dynamics are a huge part of why this series remains one of my all-time favorites.

If you love fantasy with long-term payoff, unforgettable reveals, sprawling worldbuilding, and characters who continue to surprise you book after book, Throne of Glass is absolutely worth the journey.

Tropes & Themes: Hidden royalty, assassin FMC, found family, political intrigue, enemies to lovers, magical powers, wyvern riders, epic battles, multiple POVs, sprawling fantasy worldbuilding.

Perfect For Fans Of: Epic fantasy with enormous character growth, long-running series with incredible payoffs, political fantasy, unforgettable ensemble casts, and stories where every revelation changes everything you thought you knew.

Talon the Black / The Dragonwall Series by Melissa Mitchell

⭐ My Rating: I might be a little biased. 😉

🌶️ Spice Level: Low

❤️ Romance Level: High

👑 Royalty Trope: Hidden Royalty

📚 Series Status: Complete (7 books)

✨ Vibe: Dragon shifters, slow-burn romance, political intrigue, found family, hidden identities, and epic adventure.

Since this is my list of favorite hidden royalty books, I couldn't leave out my own series. Hidden royalty has always been one of my favorite fantasy tropes, so it naturally found its way into Dragonwall. Without giving away any of the surprises, several of the series' biggest twists revolve around long-buried identities, forgotten histories, and discovering that some characters are far more important than they—or the reader—ever realized.

At its heart, Dragonwall is an epic fantasy romance about dragons, kingdoms on the brink of war, and ordinary people who discover they're capable of changing the fate of an entire world. The series features dragon shifters instead of dragon riders, a glacial slow-burn romance, political intrigue, found family, multiple points of view, and plenty of twists that continue building all the way to the final book.

One of the things readers tell me they enjoy most is watching the story expand with each installment. What begins as Claire's journey into the mysterious kingdom of Dragonwall gradually unfolds into a much larger tale filled with ancient magic, unforgettable dragons, emotionally rewarding character arcs, and secrets that are years in the making.

If hidden royalty, dragons, and slow-burn fantasy romance all happen to be your thing, I wrote this series with readers like you in mind.

Tropes & Themes: Hidden royalty, dragon shifters, slow-burn romance, political intrigue, found family, multiple POVs, hidden identities, magical bonds, completed fantasy series.

Perfect For Fans Of: Throne of Glass, Fourth Wing, Eragon, epic fantasy romance, dragon fantasy, and long-running series with satisfying character growth and emotional payoff.

The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★½

🌶️ Spice Level: Low

❤️ Romance Level: High

👑 Royalty Trope: Royalty in Hiding

📚 Series Status: Complete Duology

✨ Vibe: Enemies to lovers, political fantasy, deadly magic, witty banter, and a fallen kingdom.

The Jasad Heir immediately hooked me with one of my favorite versions of the royalty in hiding trope. Right from the beginning, we know Sylvia is the last surviving heir of a fallen kingdom, living in secret to escape those who would kill her if her identity were discovered. That constant tension gives the story an addictive edge as she struggles to survive while keeping her past buried.

My favorite part of this book, though, was the romance. The banter between Sylvia and Arin was worth the price of admission alone, and their enemies-to-lovers dynamic had me grinning from beginning to end. Their chemistry felt effortless, making every interaction between them crackle with tension.

I also couldn't help noticing some similarities to Throne of Glass, and I mean that as a compliment. If you loved the political intrigue, hidden identities, dangerous magic, and slow-burn character development that made Sarah J. Maas's series so addictive, The Jasad Heir captures a similar feeling while still telling its own unique story. Even with those familiar elements, the plot continually surprised me. Just when I thought I knew where things were headed, Sara Hashem took the story in a direction I wasn't expecting.

By the end, the story builds toward a deadly competition that promises even higher stakes, and the finale left me staring at the page after one heck of a cliffhanger. I gave this one 4.5 stars, and although I still need to read the second book, I'm thrilled that the duology is now complete. There's something comforting about knowing the payoff is waiting for me whenever I'm ready to dive back into Sylvia's story—even if I'm slightly intimidated by the size of that second book!

Tropes & Themes: Royalty in hiding, enemies to lovers, political intrigue, fallen kingdom, magical powers, deadly competition, witty banter, hidden identity, slow-burn romance.

Perfect For Fans Of: Throne of Glass, clever enemies-to-lovers romances, political fantasy, morally gray tension, hidden identities, and stories that keep you guessing until the very end.

Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★☆

🌶️ Spice Level: None (YA)

❤️ Romance Level: Medium

👑 Royalty Trope: Royalty in Hiding

📚 Series Status: Complete Trilogy

✨ Vibe: Dark YA fantasy, hidden identity, morally gray characters, political intrigue, and elemental magic.

It's been several years since I read Blood Heir, but I still remember really enjoying both the writing and the world Amélie Wen Zhao created. She's become one of those authors whose work I always keep an eye on, and this was a strong start to the trilogy.

The story follows Anastacya, a princess forced to hide her identity after spending years imprisoned, making this a great example of the royalty in hiding trope. Early on, she finds herself reluctantly teaming up with a morally gray rogue whose motivations aren't always clear, and I remember really enjoying the dynamic between them as they navigated a dangerous world full of political conflict and hidden agendas.

One of the things that stuck with me most was the atmosphere. The worldbuilding felt rich and immersive, and the setting had a darker tone than many YA fantasies while still delivering plenty of adventure and intrigue. Even years later, it's those elements that I remember most clearly.

I gave this one four stars and still need to finish the final book in the trilogy. Now that the series is complete, I really need to bump it back up my TBR and finally see how Anastacya's story ends.

Tropes & Themes: Royalty in hiding, hidden identity, morally gray love interest, political intrigue, elemental magic, rebellion, YA fantasy, slow-burn romance.

Perfect For Fans Of: Dark YA fantasy, morally gray characters, political intrigue, hidden identities, and fantasy worlds with a slightly grittier atmosphere.

The Lady Witch Series by Melissa Mitchell

⭐ My Rating: I might be a little biased. 😉

🌶️ Spice Level: High (builds throughout the series)

❤️ Romance Level: Very High

👑 Royalty Trope: Hidden Royalty

📚 Series Status: Complete (6 books)

✨ Vibe: Spicy romantasy, bonded partners, demon hunters, hidden identities, and character-driven romance.

If you're new to romantasy and feel intimidated by sprawling fantasy worlds, this is the series I wrote for you. While hidden royalty plays an important role in the overarching story, the heart of Lady Witch has always been the relationship between Mina and Rixon.

After losing her family in a tragic accident, Mina is sent to the Citadel to learn how to control her magic. There, she's permanently bonded to Rixon, a skilled wielder whose job is to protect her while they fight demons threatening the kingdom. Their partnership is for life, whether they like it or not, which makes for plenty of tension, banter, and slow-building romance as they learn to trust one another.

Unlike many epic fantasy romances, Lady Witch keeps the worldbuilding approachable and the focus firmly on the characters. The stakes gradually grow larger over the course of the six books, but the emotional core always comes back to Mina and Rixon's relationship, the bonds they build with those around them, and the secrets that slowly come to light along the way.

The spice also builds with each book, making this a great choice for readers who enjoy character-driven romantasy where the romance develops naturally before becoming steamier later in the series. If you enjoy magical partnerships, hidden identities, and fantasy adventures that are easy to sink into, I think you'll feel right at home here.

Tropes & Themes: Hidden royalty, bonded partners, forced proximity, magical academy, demon hunters, slow-burn romance, hidden identities, found family, character-driven fantasy.

Perfect For Fans Of: Character-focused romantasy, magical partnerships, relationship-driven fantasy, approachable worldbuilding, and readers looking for an easy introduction to the romantasy genre.

This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi

⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★

🌶️ Spice Level: Low (YA)

❤️ Romance Level: High

👑 Royalty Trope: Royalty in Hiding

📚 Series Status: Ongoing (planned 5-book series)

✨ Vibe: Persian-inspired fantasy, forbidden romance, political intrigue, prophecy, and morally gray characters.

Tahereh Mafi has a way of writing stories that completely consume me, and This Woven Kingdom was no exception. I absolutely inhaled the first three books because I simply couldn't put them down. Every ending left me desperate to know what happened next.

The story follows Alizeh, a servant hiding in plain sight who is secretly the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom. Living under an assumed identity isn't just inconvenient—it's the only way she can survive. I loved the almost Cinderella-like beginning, watching her quietly endure life as a servant while knowing she was destined for something so much greater. As the story unfolds, prophecy, political intrigue, and ancient magic gradually transform what seems like a simple forbidden romance into something much larger.

I'll admit, I usually avoid love triangles. They're rarely my favorite trope. Somehow, Tahereh Mafi completely won me over. At first I found myself rooting for Kamran, but as the series progressed, I became completely invested in Cyrus instead. I'm an absolute sucker for a morally gray hero, and Cyrus quickly stole the show for me.

Tahereh Mafi's lyrical prose, Persian-inspired worldbuilding, and addictive storytelling made this one of those series I couldn't stop thinking about between books. Now I'm eagerly waiting to see how everything comes together in the final installments.

Tropes & Themes: Royalty in hiding, forbidden romance, love triangle, morally gray MMC, prophecy, political intrigue, Persian-inspired fantasy, hidden identity, ancient magic.

Perfect For Fans Of: Lush fantasy worlds, beautifully written prose, morally gray love interests, forbidden romance, and readers who don't usually enjoy love triangles but are willing to make an exception.
