Foxglove (Belladonna #2)

[A Quick Note: If you haven’t read the first book, I promise to make this spoiler free, so no worries! However, you do need to read the first book, Belladonna, before reading the second book, as it is a continuation of the story. That being said, how pretty are these UK Fairyloot editions? I love them.]

“𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐱𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐧.”—Adalyn Grace

Dare I say I enjoyed this even more than the first?? I always get sooo nervous for a sequel. This one surpassed my expectations! Plus, there wasn’t just ONE paranormal love interest there were TWO. If this had been a “why choose” romance, my life would be complete. Alas, Signa did have to choose. But that’s okay because everything worked out exactly how I wanted it to.

In Foxglove, we get all the same gothic vibes set to the tune of a murder mystery, just like we did in Belladonna. Only, there was even more packed in, than in Belladonna. The plot was more complicated, in a good way, and there was more intrigue, backstory, and world building.

I absolutely loved Fate’s character. I’m a simp for a morally gray “villain” and Fate was exactly that. Well…he wasn’t so much a villain as an antagonist. The perfect antagonist. You wanted to hate him at times, and others, he was impossible not to love. I’m talking about a certain fox rescue scene.

BE STILL MY HEART!!!

I loved how Signa had to grapple with her own character arc here. She was torn between the ghastly aspects of her power, and the desire to have a magic that led to “good.” Being a reaper of death isn’t exactly glamorous. She had a very obvious internal struggle that I really appreciated.

I also loved how we got to see Blythe’s character blossom. She got some of her own POVs, setting us up nicely for the third book. Oh, and I cannot WAIT for the third book. I’m desperate for it.

As for the murder mystery aspect, I didn’t find it too predictable. Actually, it was a bit unexpected and I appreciated that. I also really liked how the perpetrator was confronted in the end, and what ended up happening.

All in all, this is one of my favorite reads of 2023, hands down. I cannot recommend this series enough. Perfect for fans of murder mysteries and gothic, fantasy romance. Also, highly recommend the audiobook. I loved the narrator’s voice for Death and Fate. I got tons of goosebumps.
